Healthy Families is a program provided by the State of California in which the cost of the plan is subsidized by the state. Members participate in the cost sharing at a reduced rate. Blue Shield is a participant in the program, but plan benefits are standardized by the State of California. In contrast, individual and family plans are designed and administered by Blue Shield, and plan members are fully responsible for the cost of coverage. The Healthy Families Program provides medical, dental and vision coverage to children under the age of 19 who: Live in California Are U.S. citizens or qualified immigrants Are not enrolled in nor eligible for no-cost Medi-Cal Were not covered in the past 3 months by employer-sponsored insurance Are in families that meet certain income guidelines (refer to “Income Eligibility”) Why do families choose Healthy Families with Blue Shield? We offer HMO and EPO plans in many counties (refer to “Plan Types and Service Areas” for details). Our HMO plan allows parents to change their child’s Primary Care Physician any time, for any reason. Our pharmacy network includes many chains, like CVS and Rite-Aid, as well as many neighborhood pharmacies. Our friendly and helpful customer service representatives can assist callers in their own languages. We can arrange language translation assistance for doctor visits
