The BBC’s period drama hit factory is hoping for another corker with their adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s timely novel about intrigue and terrorism in late Victorian London. Starring Toby Jones (seen here in Captain America: The First Avenger) as the troubled shop owner Anton Verloc, the eponymous spy who is working for the Russians. The story sees him ordered to mastermind a terrorist outrage to nudge the soft UK government against the radicals that the tsarist government want treated more harshly. Scripted by Tony Marchant, a hard-hitting writer best known for his polemical modern work, he has dabbled with successful period adaptations as well, including a very successful Great Expectations for the BBC in 1999. Premieres on BBC One on 17 July (Credit: Disney/Marvel)
